چکیده

Introduction Filaments, or blobs, are field aligned plasma structures which have been observed in the scrape of layer of magnetically confined plasmas. These filaments carry particles into the SOL and therefore play a role in determining the profiles during L-mode and inter-ELM H-mode scenarios. While there have been many investigations into the dynamics of such filaments [1, 2], few have concentrated on the explicit behavior near X-points. Magnetic tori such as the TORPEX device [3] replicate tokamak scrape off layer (SOL) scenarios while allowing straightforward diagnostic access. While filaments have been studied extensively experimentally within Torpex [4, 5, 6], no theoretical studies have yet explored the dynamics in X-point configurations [7]. The results presented here are a natural progression from previous studies in linear configurations [8], towards an ultimate aim of full tokamak edge simulations.

X-Point Effect on Plasma Blob Dynamics.

Plasma blob dynamics on the high-field side in the proximity of a magnetic field null (X point) is investigated in TORPEX. A significant acceleration of the blobs towards the X point is observed. Close to the X point the blobs break apart. The E×B drifts associated with the blobs are measured, isolating the background drift component from the fluctuating contribution of the blob internal potent...

Basic investigations of electrostatic turbulence and its interaction with plasma and suprathermal ions in a simple magnetized toroidal plasma

Progress in basic understanding of turbulence and its influence on the transport both of the plasma bulk and of suprathermal components is achieved in the TORPEX simple magnetized torus. This configuration combines a microwave plasma production scheme with a quasi-equilibrium generated by a toroidal magnetic field, onto which a small vertical component is superimposed, simulating a simplified f...

Basic investigations of turbulence and interactions with plasma and suprathermal ions in the TORPEX device with open and closed field lines

TORPEX is a flexible device dedicated to investigating basic plasma physics phenomena of importance for fusion. It can feature a simple magnetized toroidal (SMT) configuration with a dominant toroidal magnetic field and a small vertical field component, or accommodate closed field-line configurations of increasing complexity. Among these are simple plasmas limited by the vessel on the low field...

Blob-induced toroidal momentum transport in simple magnetized plasmas

The link between toroidal flows and density blobs is experimentally demonstrated in TORPEX simple magnetized plasmas: momentum is transferred from an ideal-interchange mode to density blobs. The phase shift between the toroidal flow and the density perturbations observed in the interchange mode where the blob is born is conserved along the blob radial trajectory. This leads to dipolar structure...

Electrostatic turbulent structures in TORPEX plasmas

Experimental data from many Tokamaks suggest that an important fraction of radial particle and heat transport in the Scrape-Off-Layer is due to poloidally-localized propagating structures of increased plasma density (blobs). A better understanding of the mechanism leading to blobs might help to lower the radial transport and control damages to plasma facing components. Such structures are exper...
